WSS welcomes back award-winning British painter Frances Featherstone to teach The Figure in Interior Space. The isolated figure as portrait has potential for reaching deeply into the soul and personality of the individual, but as soon as the figure is placed in an environment a whole new story begins to emerge. The room, its character, light, color, the objects in it, the views out of windows become as much about the personality of the person as their pose. A clothed figure in a space evokes an event, a slice of time, and a mood that is specific and narrative, yet in the best of work also universal. This class will use photo references and live models via zoom. Oil paint is the recommended medium, but all materials are welcome. Students can expect to be introduced to the work of numerous master and contemporary artists, as well as concepts about space, color, light and composition. They will be encouraged to work confidently and expressively, while maintaining strong perceptual skills. Previous painting experience and work with the figure is recommended.

Finding Confidence,Freedom and Expression in the Portrait

5 Weeks Online via Zoom

10am - 1pm EST or 3pm - 6pm GMT

October 31 - December 5 (no class November 21)

$235 WSS welcomes back visiting artist Frances Featherstone from the UK to share her exuberant and confident use of color and mark with oil paint. Frances’s award-winning paintings range from the skillfully representational to recent bold gestural abstractions from life. As painters, our mark is as critical to telling our story as our lines, shapes, and color are. But fear and lack of confidence often get in the way of putting down the mark that you really need or want to. This class will focus on the portrait and all of the infinite nuances and variations in the human head and face. It will give you the confidence to boldly put down paint, with both abandon and control, take the fear out of mark-making with oil, and help you to truly embrace color. And it will help you to connect with another through mark, color and form. Work will be from observation, including the live model through zoom. Demos, dialog and feedback will be part of the class, as well as substantial in-class work-time.
